Book: A Well-Written Instruction Manual
It’s rare to find a spiritual instruction manual that manages to translate the final outcome properly, a manual that is written to evoke the very sensations it is attempting to guide the reader towards.
To me, “A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle and “The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali” translated by Chip Hartranft are this brand of an instruction manual. Both books instruct the reader on ways to reach a state of inner peace and enlightenment. When I read these texts time seems to stand still, my breath deepens and my gaze softens. While specific instructions are left behind, after each line is read, all that is acquired is that which the instructions point towards – inner peace. With rhythm, phrasing and careful composition these writers built lullabies to peace, a sort of meditation.
Perhaps hypnosis, perhaps good writing, perhaps wisdom, perhaps truth – whatever it is, it’s kind of nice.
